As test your strength and endurance at the Plane Pull, you will raise
funds and awareness for Special Olympics athletes. Every dollar raised
by Special Olympics Southern California enriches the lives of athletes
with intellectual disabilities and their communities through sports,
education, and athlete health. Learn more about Special Olympics

As you all know, Special Olympics Southern California is one of our preferred charities and a Supreme featured program.  This year, we want to make a big effort to have 10 full Knights of Columbus teams participate in the Plane Pull fundraiser.  With these 10 full teams, we hope to reach $15,000 in fundraising that will help people with intellectual disabilities compete in sports.  We encourage you all to either start your own team or to join an existing KofC team.

It’s a real fun event to participate in and the competiveness of who has the fastest team to pull the big FedEx plane is real.   Last year Dr. Ray’s team, which I was part of, had the distinction of raising the most funds and having the plane the longest period of time (not the same as the fastest team).

Last year we had been on Dr. Rays’s team I believe and we were only a handful of us . This year I would love to see our team raise some money for this event and I will speak to Brother Jim in how to do so. There was a lot of confusion last year but this year if we cant raise enough, it doesn’t mean we still can’t participate.

Please Brothers let represent our ministry by bringing in family and friends on the team. You can register on the team page and also donate as well. Please contact myself or Brother Jim James Larson for more information. Meeting place will be added in a few weeks to come. Thanks and God bless you all.

If you're definitely coming, please leave a comment below and either myself or your POD will get in contact with you later. I'm also hoping to have some our brothers up Northern Cali and San Diego join us. This will be a wonderful way to start this year by helping and serving our community and church. Silver Rose Schedule

Attached is the schedule for the Silver Rose route in California.  The Silver Rose will be received in Las Vegas, Nevada from the Nevada Brother Knights on August 12, 2018.  Then it will travel through Northern California Chapter, Oakland Chapter, St Francis Chapter, San Joaquin Chapter, Los Padres Chapter, Southern California Chapter, San Gabriel Valley Chapter and finally to San Diego Chapter.  On September 16, 2018 the Silver Rose will be transferred to our Brother Knights in Yuma, Arizona.

We are working with the Chapter Presidents to determine exact dates and times of each transfer.

The first Silver Rose Run started 58 years ago (1960) by the Columbian Squires in Mexico.  They began the run to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe.  The Knights of Columbus in Texas joined the run a year later.    In the mid-1990s it was included as a Supreme Council program.  Today there are eight Silver Rose routes.  See the attached The Silver Rose Story document for additional information on the program.  Click here for information and updates on the eight Silver Rose routes.

This year Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run began on March 4, 2018 in Alaska and is making its way down through British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Nevada.  California will receive the Silver Rose in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 12, 2018.   On September 16, 2018 it will be transferred to our Brother Knights in Yuma, Arizona then continue its journey through New Mexico and Texas.  The Silver Rose will end its journey on December 12, 2018, Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day, at the Basilica in Monterrey, Mexico.

We are honored again to have the California Knights On Bikes provide an escort for the Silver Rose during its travel through California.  They will escort the Silver Rose when it’s being transferred to the next chapter on the schedule, if riders are available in the area.  Contact California Knights On Bike Chapter President Dan Hargis at dhargis@sftran.org or phone: 661-706-1340 to coordinate the transfer.  I suggest you contact him soon after the location, date, and time for the transfer has been determined.  He will make every effort to provide riders for the transfer.

The Silver Rose is fragile and must be carefully handled with white gloves.  It is stored, along with white gloves, in a ruggedized carrying case for transport.  Prayer books and prayer cards accompany the Silver Rose.  If more material is needed it can be ordered from the Supreme Council by emailing Brother William O’Brien, Manager, Cultural of Life Activities at william.obrien@kofc.org; phone: 203-752-4403.
